Luddington Primitive Methodist Chapel, Lincolnshire

Luddington is a marshland village situated in the north of the former Epworth and Crowle Methodist circuit,. Luddington P.M. chapel was opened in 1841 to seat 127. This was demolished in 1867 and a larger chapel on the same site opened in 1893. The last service was on 24.10.1965 and the building has since been demolished.

  • The Primitive Methodist magazine of June 1893 page 379 tells us that the memorial stones for a new Primitive Methodist chapel at Cuddington in the Crowle circuit were laid in 1893.  The society had “patiently waited” for a long time and over half the cost had already been raised.

    I had the technical difficulty that I could not place Cuddington. There are villages called Cuddington in at least Cheshire, Buckinghamshire and Surrey, but Crowle is on the Lincolnshire / Yorkshire border, not too far from Doncaster. It turns out to be a typographical error for Luddington – in the Crowle circuit, with the same opening date and with a similar story.
