Lightfoot, John (1797-1873)

John was born on 21 February 1797 in Durham to parents John and Jane. He was baptised at St Giles, Durham on 24 February 1797.

Ministry

In 1821, he was the leader of two classes in the Wesleyan Church. He entertained John Branfoot when he first visited Newcastle upon Tyne in 1821. Having heard the preaching of John Branfoot,  with Mary Porteus, John became a PM Preacher.

Patterson reports that during the superintendency of John, from 1838, the Hexham circuit sustained three missions—Jedburgh, in Roxburghshire, Morpeth and Rothbury.

Family

John married Martha Burnup (1809-1878) on 7 February 1828 at Brompton by Northallerton, Yorkshire.They had twelve children identified in census returns.

  • Thomas Robert (1845-1893) a commercial clerk
  • Margaret (b1847) – a boarding housekeeper
  • Elizabeth (b1849)
  • Eleanor (1851-1914) – a dressmaker
  • Charles Henry (1854-1936) – a PM Minister

John died on 2 June 1873 in Sunderland.
