Early years

Samuel was born on 7 June 1807 at Warslow, Staffordshire to parents Samuel and Catherine. He was baptised on 14 June 1807 at Elkstone and Warslow, Staffordshire. The family moved to Nesherton, Staffordshire when Samuel was young. He was brought up in the Baptist tradition. Samuel was converted under the preaching of John Nelson and joined the Primitive Methodists.

Ministry

The Reverand J Wright writes in his obituary; ‘As a preacher he was well received, especially by the educated and intelligent, those who could distinguish mental power and worth from more empty declamation. His sermons, carefully prepared, were rich in evangelical amd matured thought, giving evidence of a well cultivated and balanced mind.’

Family

Samuel married Mary Geach (1808-1838) on 25 June 1835 at Kenwyn, Cornwall. They had one child.

• Samuel Thomas (1838-1908) – a pharmaceutical chemist

Samuel married Eleanor Stevens (1797-1881) in 1841 at Redruth, Cornwall. He died on 29 January 1873 at Southampton, Hampshire
