Middlesbrough lay preacher

By John Forster on 22/12/2017 at 11:01

My Gt. Gt. Grandfather John Forster had Local Methodist Preacher on his 1881 Census return and I would be very grateful for any information about that aspect of his life that is available.

He was born in Allendale in 1823, was a lead miner and lead smelter before moving to Middlesbrough at some time between 1863 and 1871. In 1871 he was listed as a labourer at Middlesbrough Docks and lived at 3 Corporation Road.

In the 1881 census he was living in 18 Lennox Street and as well as a Methodist preacher was a Dock staithesman.

He died in 1884 following a crushing accident at the docks.

I have looked through on-line Methodist resources but cant find anything definitive about him so I would be very grateful if someone more expert could investigate.
