Holy, holy, holy was number 261 in the Supplement to the Primitive Methodist Hymnal with Supplement 1889. The words were written by Mary Artemisia Lathbury (1841-1913) and the tune Sennen by American Baptist William Fisk Sherwin (1826-1888). Sound the battle cry! is another of his hymns.

One of the attractive quirks of the Primitive Methodist Hymnal with Supplement 1889 was that the music edition included suggested dynamics telling singers how loudly or softly to sing – a little refinement coming into the Ranters.

Tunes with choruses were appreciated because someone in the congregation or the person playing the American organ would often start the chorus again when the hymn should have finished.
