Bateman, Albert (1886-?)

Conscientious Objector

Albert Bateman, was a Primitive Methodist, and one of 12 children of George and Rosa Bateman (three died before 1911). Albert worked with his father, who was a Carting Contractor, and they lived at Kiveton Park, near Sheffield, in Yorkshire.

Albert belonged to the No-Conscription Fellowship, and spent time in a number of prisons, including Newcastle, Durham, Wormwood Scrubs, and Winchester, from which he was eventually discharged on 20 June 1919.
