Barnetby Primitive Methodist chapel

St Barnabas Road DN38 6JB

In the Primitive Methodist magazine of 1856 W Lonsdale writes of the opening of Barnetby Primitive Methodist chapel.

“Brother G. Austin concluded the opening services of Barnetby Chapel, Brigg circuit, on Sunday, January 13th, 1856, to the full satisfaction of the trustees and the public. The chapel will seat about 120 persons, and has cost about £120. Already more than one-third of the whole cost has been collected, and another effort is in reserve.

The chapel has an elevation and a boarded floor, and is pronounced one of the most comfortable in the neighbourhood. W. Hudson, Esq., generously granted the trustees a lease of the land for 99 years at a rent of 1 shilling per year. The trustees also acknowledge the favours of Mrs. Perkin, Mr. G. Biddle, Mr. John White, Mr. G. Dent, Mr. Ashton, and especially Mrs. Gibbons and Mr. J. Neave, who generously supported them by begging and giving.

The workmanship of Mr. Bilton, the bricklayer, and Mr. West, the joiner, has given good satisfaction. And, best of all, two or three souls have been persuaded in this little sanctuary to turn to God.”

The chapel was located on St Barnabas Road, opposite the junction with Victoria Road. It disappears from Ordnance Survey maps available to me after 1950 and there is no sign of it on Google Street view in 2009
