The first Norwood Primitive Methodist chapel was opened in 1881. The second chapel was opened in 1901. It is still in use in August 2017.
Colin Dews tells us that the architect of the 1901 chapel was J.C Petch, of Scarborough.
The number of members in the Primitive Methodist circuit fell from about 400 in 1912-14 to just over 300 in the late 1920s.
The current chapel is built in front of the 1881 chapel. Some of the date stones are shown in the pictures here, but others are badly eroded by weathering.

I can find no record of John Waterland Croft as a Methodist Minister. A brief family history search has him born in 1850 in Hull, Yorkshire, and being buried on 19 July 1900 at Norwood, Beverley, Yorkshire. Census returns, 1871, 1881 and 1891 describe him as a wood carver, and a 1882 directory lists him as a foreman joiner.
It is possible that he was a local preacher, and maybe, living next door to the chapel, a chapel keeper.
You might find out more information if you can access the records of the chapel, e.g. minutes of the trustees meeting, and, or, preaching plans, through the local records office.
Our ancestor, John Waterland Croft, was listed as a minister of the Methodist Church on his death in 1901. He lived in Norwood St next the the Primitive Methodist Church. Did he serve there before his death?
