Bridgnorth Primitive Methodist Chapel

St. Mary's Steps, Bridgnorth WV16 4AQ

Bridgnorth Primitive Methodist chapel, on St Mary’s Steps, was initially a Wesleyan chapel, sold to the Prims in 1854.  It closed in 1933 and is currently a house.

The Primitive Methodist Chapel on St Mary’s Steps is situated at the bottom of a long and steep flight of steps. The other end of St Mary’s Steps leads out on to Underhill Street, a fair distance below. It is entered through a narrow passageway and then climbs up by a number of flights of steep steps to finish at the top by the Parish Church of St Mary Magdalene. Visiting here in 2022 it became very obvious that who ever built the chapel had a very hard and arduous job. All the materials would have had to be moved on to the site by hand. Using a ‘horse and cart’ form of transport in 1832 may not have been practical. The chapel building is only a footpath width away from the edge of a high bank down to Underhill Street. It may have been possible to crane the building materials up from below to the chapel site.

As stated above the Chapel closed for worship in 1933. Since the Keith Guyler photograph of 2000 the chapel building has a name plaque called ‘Old Kingdom Hall’ on the front wall. Was the building once used by the Jehovah Witnesses?

In 2022 it is a domestic dwelling.

There is more about the chapel on Janet Cox’s website “Shropshire’s Non-Conformist Chapels
