Broad Moore Colliery, Pembroke Mission
Temperance Hall for the Primitive Methodist Connexion
The Primitive Methodist Magazine for May 1854 contains a piece by W Sapcoat about the opening of a Temperance Hall for the Primitive Methodist Connexion at Broad Moore Colliery, part of the Pembroke Mission – “a place where it is much needed”.
The room, which can accommodate 180, was fitted out by Mrs Spencer of Jefferston House for the dual purpose of advocating temperance principles and preaching the gospel to the surrounding villages. It opened on Friday March 24th 1854 with a temperance tea meeting and on the following Sunday the Prims held their first services. Mr Sapcoat preached to “large and deeply affected audiences.”
I do not know how long the room was in use for: on the 1890 1:2,500 Ordnance Survey map, the Colliery is disused and the building is not marked. Jefferston is now Jeffreyston.
