Daisy Bank Primitive Methodist chapel

The Primitive Methodist magazine of November 1852 contains an account by Philip Pugh of the opening of Daisy Bank Primitive Methodist chapel in the Darlaston Circuit.

The society had been in need of a chapel for twenty years before the chapel was opened. The opening services took place on August 22nd and 29th 1852 when the preachers were Mr. W. George, of Shrewsbury, Mr Pugh, the Rev. H Wheeler of Stafford, and Mr. George Reynolds, of Bradley. The chapel measured around 12 yards by 10.

It has since been demolished and it took a while to track down where this chapel was – see the comments below.

Bradley Medical Centre now stands on the site of the chapel. Thanks to Nag for the picture.

  • Thanks for the pointer Nag: it lead me to research the old Ordnance Survey maps of the area.

I’ve added a clip from the 1901 Ordnance Survey map of the area to the west of Daisy Bank railway station. It shows the Wesleyan Methodist chapel and Sunday school – still standing on Hall Green Street and active as Bradley Methodist church. The Primitive Methodist chapel is shown further west, set back to the south of Hall Green Street and next to the Great Western Inn. The Prim chapel is still there on the 1913 and 1938 maps.

However, it is not on the 1884 map, so is not the chapel described in the 1852 Primitive Methodist magazine. I cannot find another Primitive Methodist chapel on the 1884 map, but there is a building marked as “chapel” further east of Hall Green Street, on what was then Cross Street. It was almost next to the terraced Wesley Street. The area has been redeveloped since.

  • Daisy Bank is 3 miles south east of Wolverhampton.
On Monday 9th July 1827, W. Gibson, Darlaston Circuit, “spoke at Daisy Bank, had a shaking time; the presence and power of God was felt.”

  • It has “The Maude Institute” and says it was a chapel of St Edwards C of E . So this page must be correct and it’s somewhere in Darlaston.

  • There is a former chapel in Daisy Bank Leek.  I will see if it has any markings in the stonework when I go past it next.
