Betton, Eliza Philippa (nee Booth) (1872-1900)

Transcription of Obituary In the Christian Messenger

ELIZA PHYLLIS BETTON neé Booth. — She was From an early age she attended our Sunday school at Hope’s Gate, and was of a lively, yet thoughtful disposition, and fond of reading. When she was about sixteen a memorable revival took place at Hope’s Gate, and scores were led to accept Christ. She was the first to volunteer to be the Lord’s. She at once joined the Church and became very useful in the choir, and as a Sunday school teacher. She always thought it an honour to work for God. She was joined in marriage to Richard Betton, a convert of the same revival, and was happy in her married life. She was an affectionate wife and a fond mother. The affliction which terminated her early life was short and severe, lasting only about a week. During this period of lingering on the border-land of the eternal world her joy and peace in the Lord were great. I visited her on the Sunday before her death, and asked her in regard to her confidence in Christ. She was perfectly trustful and submissive, and said ‘Thy will, not mine, O Lord be done,’ and whilst repeating it her countenance was radiant with Divine light. During the time my brother and l were praying with her the room was filled with the Divine presence and glory. She was shortly afterwards removed to the Shrewsbury Infirmary, where she underwent a surgical operation which proved fatal. In reply to her husband’s inquiry just after the operation, she said ‘Don’t trouble about me, dear, I am all right.’ She bore her suffering with calmness and fortitude and fell asleep in Jesus Oct. 9th, 1900, and was interred in Shelve Graveyard, Oct. 13th, 1900. The writer conducted an ‘In Memoriam ’ service in Hope‘s Gate Chapel on the following Sunday, which was largely attended. She has gone to our Father’s House above. May her husband, her daughter, and large circle of friends so walk in ‘the path of life’ that they may meet her in the Summerland of Heaven.

R OVERTON.
