Hutchinson, Elizabeth Frances Alma (nee West) (abt1856-1901)

Transcription of Obituary In the Christian Messenger

The late Mrs. G. Hutchinson, of Knaresborough, was born in a little village about a mile out of Portsmouth. As a child she went with her friends to the Wesleyan Sunday School and Chapel. Even at that early age she was much respected both by teachers and preachers, and was never known to be absent from school or chapel, wet or fine, when health and strength permitted.

Later on she came to reside in the West Riding of Yorkshire with her sister, Mrs. King, at Bingley. Mrs. King being a Primitive Methodist, she went with her to our place of worship in Bingley, and became a Sunday school teacher. She was brought to decide fully for Christ under a sermon preached by Mr. John Dawson Fox, and gave evidence of a complete change of heart. Her attendance at class, and the more private means of grace for the cultivation of her own spiritual life was very regular and punctual. Her religious experience was full, rich, clear, and pronounced. She was not a doubter; but a believer. She seemed to have an abiding faith in the great work of Christ. Her religious life did not fluctuate like that of some; but was even, bright, cheerful, and hopeful. Her class leader, Mr. Whitehouse, observes that her presence at the class meetings was always very welcome to himself and the other members of the class. She seems to have won a good place in the affection of all she came in contact with.

Taking the late Mrs. Hutchinson for all in all, we shall not soon look upon her like again. Revs. Gillender, Cairns, Luke Stafford, Johnson, all speak of her in the highest terms as a Christian worker in our Knaresborough Church, to which, I should like to add my humble tribute. We first became acquainted with her and her husband when we travelled at Otley, some sixteen years ago. They were residing there at that time, and to that acquaintance I can trace our present connection with Knaresborough Circuit. One of her last utterances were in that well-known hymn which she gave expression to in a most impressive manner:
“Safe in the arms of Jesus
Safe on His gentle breast,
There by His love o’ershadowed.
Sweetly my head shall rest.”
