Sewell, Elizabeth Smith (1876-1900)

Transcription of Obituary In the Christian Messenger

ELIZABETH SEWELL.- The friends of the South Shields Laygate P.M. Church have to mourn the loss of the aforenamed sister, who was interred at Harton Cemetery on Sunday, December 2nd, in the presence of a large number of sympathising friends. The Rev. H. Yooll and Mr. J. Parker conducted the service at the graveside, which was most impressive. The hymn ‘Safe in the arms of Jesus,’ was sung before leaving the house and many were moved to tears. Our late sister belonged to a P.M. family, her father being a leader of the Church at present; her late mother was also a class-leader and held in the highest esteem. As a member of the Sunday school and Endeavour Society Sister Sewell endeared herself to all by her charming disposition, and great sorrow is felt by all her friends that one with such promise of usefulness, and but in her 24th year, should be called away. But it was the Master’s will and we humbly bow. Although very unobtrusive, yet she was always very willing to render any service required of her, and her vocal gifts made her a valuable member of the choir. Her illness was a prolonged one, but she was uniformly cheerful and patient although suffering great pain at times, and passed away trusting in the Saviour she loved. May her life be an incentive to all to follow the Master more closely. – C.E.
