Onions, Emma (nee Pearce) (1820-1904)

Transcription of Obituary In the Christian Messenger

Mrs. EMMA ONIONS, of Ketley, fell asleep in Jesus on April 8th, 1904, aged 83 years. By her decease the Beveley Society in the Oakengates and Wellington Circuit has experienced a felt loss, for our late sister was one of its worthiest members. She was converted to God in our Beveley Chapel under the preaching of Mrs. Edwards many years ago, and she ever afterwards felt a sacred attachment to that sanctuary. Her attendance at the services at Beveley was her delight, and she allowed nothing but providential hindrances to keep her away. From the upper and nether springs of the sanctuary her piety was nourished, and the leaf of her godly profession was kept green and fair. Her humble love to Christ, her peaceable disposition, her consistent life, her persevering attachment to the worship of God, made her an unconscious helper of her fellow-believers, and a pattern to her family, for whom she has left the legacy of her prayers. She valued the class meeting and diligently attended it, and earnestly took her part in the prayer meetings. Her end was a blessed one. Power to speak distinctly had nearly left her, but those who were privileged to witness her departure heard her say, as she communed with the Holy One: “Guide, guide,” and when approaching the river she was heard to say, “Glory, glory,” then looking upward with a smile, she gradually went down into the divided Jordan, finishing her course with joy. May her spiritual mantle fall upon her family!
