Martin, Esau (1839-1910)

Transcription of Obituary In the Christian Messenger

THE “home call” came to our brother, lovingly known as “Charles” Martin of Kingston Bagpuze. He was born at Highworth, Wilts. When a young man he removed to Longworth, in the Faringdon Circuit, where he became soundly converted, and for forty-eight years his name stood on the plan as a local preacher. He was a pillar of strength to the Society and the Circuit; strong and vigorous, he was known for miles around, and rejoiced in service; camp meetings, open-air meetings, class meetings, prayer meetings; these were his delight. Failing health necessitated fewer appointments, until with reluctance he was obliged to lay down the work, but we did not anticipate the end so near. The last illness was brief, his faith in God was strong, and on 24th February, 1910, “he was not, for God took him.” The funeral took place on 1st March. The first part of the service was held in the Southmoor Chapel (kindly lent), the interment in the village churchyard. Rev. Wm. Brass conducted the service, Rev. S. M. Butters (Wesleyan) taking part. The attendance was large and representative, the floral wreaths were many; one came from North Berks Liberal Association with the motto “In memory of a brave comrade in freedom’s fight,” and another from a prominent church lady, with the words “In token of most true gratitude to God for the Christian life and example of Charles Martin.” Nature was in her kindest mood, the sun shone, the birds sang, spring had come. In the midst of the sorrow came to all the hope of final reunion. At the close of the service the congregation impressively sang “The Christian’s Goodnight.”
