Collingwood, Esther (nee Jaques) (1841-1902)

Transcription of Obituary In the Christian Messenger

MRS. ESTHER COLLINGWOOD.— There has recently died at Stanhope one of the oldest members of the Westgate Circuit in the person of Mrs. Esther Collingwood. She became a member of the Stanhope Society in 1863. In 1867 she was married to the late Mr. Stephen Collingwood, one of our most highly-esteemed and respected local preachers. They removed to Bolihope, and for nearly 20 years our sister was connected with the Frosterley Society. On the death of her husband in 1886 she returned to Stanhope, and spent the remainder of her life there. She was a loyal and consistent Christian, “always abounding in the work of the Lord.”

The last three years of her life were spent in great suffering, yet she never repined. The writer was often cheered and blessed when visiting her by her firm and constant trust in Jesus. All that love could render to brighten her closing days was done, and, surrounded by her loved ones, she passed peacefully away on December 5th, 1902. The funeral took place on December 8th, 1902. The service in the chapel and at the cemetery was conducted by the Rev. J. Toyn and Mr. J. Unwin.
