Flottergate Primitive Methodist Church opened on 23 May 1880, and closed on 15 November 1970. It has since been demolished. Described by William Leary as ‘the crowning glory of the Primitive Methodists’.

The 1879 Primitive Methodist magazine records  the laying of the foundation stones for a new Primitive Methodist chapel at Flottergate in the Grimsby First station. The new chapel would accommodate 1,000 people with a school room for 500, an infant schoolroom and 10 classrooms.

  • My parents, Pauline Frances Adams of Veal Street married James William Buffey of Macaulay Street, both Grimsby at Flottergate on October 16th 1950. I was born 14 June 1956 and baptised Linda Jane, my brother born 14 June 1960 was baptised Martin Andrew. We went to Sunday School and BP uniformed organisations there until the church closed in 1970 and the congregation moved to Lord Street Methodist Church, renamed Haven.

  • Have just found out my Great great great grandfather, Edward Harris retired to Flottergate and was a PM lay preacher/ trustee of the church when it first opened in 1880. He was also chairman of the Sunday Schools anniversary for 25 years at Tetney Lock. I would be interested if the above Katie Harris has any family connection.

  • Interesting information. I recently collected an antique book from June 1901, awarded to S.W. Nurse at Flottergate pm Sunday school and thought I’d give it a search to find out more.
