Frierson (Frieston?) Primitive Methodist chapel

Fulbeck circuit - but where was it?

The opening of Frierson Primitive Methodist chapel is reported by J Middleton in the Primitive Methodist magazine of 1834. Opening services took place in the Spring of 1834.

We are told very little about the chapel except that it was furnished with forms and, intriguingly, a well built brick pulpit.

There was also the slight problem of where on earth Frierson is (or was). I could not find it on various gazetteers. The fact that it was in Fulbeck circuit suggests it was in Lincolnshire.

Howard Richter comments that he would be astonished if this were to turn out not to be the Frieston (sic) that is east-south-east of Newark and a few miles south of Fulbeck.
The GR is SK 939 477. However on the 1880s Ordnance Survey 1:2,500 map there is no sign of any chapel, 50 years after the opening in the report.

What happened to the chapel and the people who worshipped there?

  • The Primitive Methodists were meeting in Caythorpe and Frieston in 1829 (and Fulbeck as it happens) according to returns required by the House of Commons. This suggests that the chapel on Frieston Green might be the one referred to in 1834. The chapel was no longer registered by 1867.

  • one further piece of information – which may be no help at all: the 1839 Primitive Methodist magazine includes an account by Jeremiah Gilbert of the opening of Frieston Shore Primitive Methodist chapel – and that was in the Boston circuit. See here for the full detail.

  • The Genuki website states a PM Chapel once stood in the area of NGR SK 939477 on Frieston Green. It states it is closed and has no graveyard and no other info is given.

  • Fulbeck Genuki website mentions a Primitive methodist Chapel in the village. Google street view confirms it still stands in Washdyke Road at NGR SK 9460 5019 and the dedication stone can just be made out to read Primitive. Underneath another dedication stone says restored in 1889 I think so is older than that date. It has in recent times been converted to two garages. Its in Fulbeck so is this possibly the mysterious Frierson PM Chapel.
