Allen, Harriett (nee Steele) (1852-1904)

Transcription of Obituary In the Christian Messenger

Mrs. HARRIETT ALLEN, wife of Mr. W. Allen,‘ of Byron Street, Macclesfield Circuit, died in the Lord, May 25th, 1904, aged 51 years. In early life she attended the services of the Wesleyan Church at Langley, where her parents were members, and was a scholar in the Sunday school. On her parents removing to Macclesfield she came with them. Her parents paid a visit to our Byron Street Chapel, took a liking to the service and joined the church. Their daughter (Mrs. Allen) had always lived a consistent, moral life, but one Sunday evening, in our Byron Street Chapel, she made a full surrender of herself to Jesus Christ and at once joined our church, and for 19 years was a consistent and useful member. A Class was soon found for her in Sunday school, and she continued to teach the same class until she was translated to the higher service of Heaven. She was most regular and conscientious in her attendance to all religious duties. She loved the class meeting. Her class leader, Mr. Joseph Shaw, says: “She would sometimes say how she had anticipated the meeting and what a pleasure it was to be there. She would rather meet with God’s people in Christian fellowship than be elsewhere. She was clear in her spiritual experience; she knew in whom she believed; she had no doubt nor misgiving as to her acceptance with God or her hope for the future.” Her piety shone eminently at home. She had adopted the commendable method of reading the Scriptures, as well as praying in private daily, morning and evening. Her husband, who mourns her loss, says she was a most industrious and affectionate wife; she looked well to the ways of her household, and did not eat the bread of idleness. A memorial service was conducted by the writer, when a crowded congregation assembled to pay respect to her memory. Her departure is a distinct loss to our church.
