High Catton Primitive Methodist Chapel, Yorkshire

Borthwick Institute Archives (part of York University) has the following information about this chapel:

A Primitive Methodist Chapel was built at the crossroads in High Catton in 1856, its members having previously met in private houses.

The chapel was part of the York Circuit of the Primitive Methodist Connexion until 1883 when the Circuit was divided into two and High Catton became part of the York First Circuit, renamed York, Monkgate Circuit in 1903.

In 1932 the Primitive, Wesleyan and United Methodist Churches joined together to form the new Methodist Church of Great Britain. The Primitive Methodist chapel at High Catton was closed c.1933.

The records cover correspondence concerning the sale of the chapel and receipt for title deeds, 1934-1936.

The 1851 Religious Census for Yorkshire identifies worship taking place in a dwelling house. The afternoon congregation was 30 and the evening 27. The Remarks record; “On March 31st in the evening there were 60 assembled, therefore I should say about 40 is an average number. Signed Henry Peacock, Class leader & Steward.”
