Doncaster; Highfield Road Primitive Methodist Chapel.

The Highfield Road Primitive Methodist chapel was a large chapel opened in 1906, designed to meet the needs of a growing area of population just north of the Doncaster central area. In 1920 following a circuit reorganisation it became the principal church of the South Yorkshire mission.
It had a relatively short life being closed in 1964/65 and the building has since been demolished.
Records from 1927 to 1964 are held by the Doncaster records office.

I have my great grandfather’s walking stick, complete with silver collar, bearing the inscription: Presented to E Mansell on his retirement from Highfield Road Choir Doncaster 1945. A staunch Methodist, I remember him vividly, though he passed away in the 1970’s. Quite a momento for me, of a place I never knew as I was born in Wheatley Hills in 1960
This was my dad’s church, where he and his brothers first attended Boys’ Brigade, and his sisters went through Girls’ Brigade. His two oldest sisters were married here, but not long afterwards, the church closed and merged with Beckett Road (ex-United) nearby, to become St Andrew’s, which my dad still attends today. I never knew the building, it having been knocked down before I was born, but “Highfield Road” was a wistful phrase heard much in my childhood, from my dad, aunts and uncles!
