Huncote Primitive Methodist chapels

Cheney End LE9 3AD and Forest Road LE9 3BH

Primitive Methodists built a chapel in Cheney End, Huncote in 1874. Thirty-three years later  in 1907, to coincide with the Primitive Methodist Centenary, they built a new church in Forest Road. The new church which cost £1050 was designed to seat 220.

In 2016, the original chapel is used as a store.  It is the registered office of Veloce Spares Ltd, set up by Velocette Owners Club to supply its members with parts to keep their classic motorcycles operational.  The date stone retains the date 1874, but the rest of the writing – probably the phrase Primitive Methodist – has been obscured.

Thanks to David Girdler for information about early documents relating to the building’s sale in 1910 and later use.  The Prims first bought land from Richard Davies in 1864 and an adjacent plot from William Key in 1875. It was then that the chapel building that survives today was built.  What was on the site before that? Was there a building the Prims could use, or did they erect a short term home?  Download the document listed below to find out more about the initial Trustees who bought the two plots of land and later sold it.

After the Primitive Methodist society decided in 1908 to build a bigger chapel , the 1875 building was sold, initially in 1910 to Fred Asher, a bag hosier. It was later sold to a hosiery manufacturer, then an instrument maker and various others before being acquired by the Velocette Owners Club.

The Forest Road church is still in use.

  • A Primitive Methodist chapel had been registered in Huncote by 1867. The use of the word ‘chapel’ implies that it was an actual building whose sole users were the Primitive Methodists, but would cover temporary structures (e.g. tin tabernacles).
