Holbrook, James (1827-1901)

Transcription of Obituary In the Christian Messenger

MR. JAMES HOLBROOK. — In the departure of James Holbrook to the better land, Somer Wood Church, Hadnall Circuit, has lost a true and loyal member; 50 years a local preacher, the last 25 were spent in Hadnall Station, where he laboured and did all he could to build up and help on the work of God. His home life was consistent with his profession. His house was ever open to ministers and church workers, who were always heartily welcomed by him and his good wife, who is left behind to finish her journey alone. His self-forgetfulness and thoughtfulness for others were ever manifest. He thoroughly appreciated the ministry of God’s servants, and the services of the sanctuary, and did much to enhance the prosperity of the church he loved. His piety was deep and unmistakeable. He had his faults and failings, as are common to most, but he was a humble disciple of Jesus. No one could fail to observe his Christian fortitude and calm reliance upon his Saviour during the last weeks of wearying and often intense suffering. He quietly awaited the summons to enter the higher service and perfect life of heaven. He fell asleep in Jesus, November 13th, 1901, aged 74 years. He is gone, we are impoverished, and especially so the dear widow for whom we crave Divine consolation, but heaven is enriched. The saintly life is now over, but the true Christian spirit of his toil, the inspiration of his character, will live with us for ever.
