Widdup, John (1819-1898)

Transcription of Obituary In the Christian Messenger

MR. JOHN WIDDUP, of BEVERLEY. — The subject of this brief memoir passed to his rest on December 24th, 1898, at the age of 79 years. He was born in the city of Hull, removing to Beverley when quite a young man. He was brought to God early in life, and for some 70 years was an exemplary member of our church, and a local preacher for nearly 60. He was a great advocate of Christian Holiness, and one of the finest and sunniest living exponents of the Spirit-filled life it has been our pleasure to know. He accompanied the late Rev. Parkinson Milson in many of his journeyings; and he, with several other ministers, was for many years entertained in his house. After a short illness, borne with great patience, like a tired child he fell asleep, and went to be ‘for ever with the Lord.’ He will, however, long live here in many lives ‘made better by his presence’ and influence.
