Early years

Joseph was born in April 1829 at Ipstones, Staffordshire to parents Joseph and Martha. He was baptised on 17 May 1829 at Ipstones. His father was a farmer.

Joseph’s education commenced at Chedleton, where he displayed a passion for books and an uncommon aptitude for learning. When Joseph was about 12 years old, the family moved to Whim Farm, Moneyash, Derbyshire. Joseph continued in school until the age of 17. He was converted aged 16/17 and soon appeared on the plan as an exhorter.

Joseph was influenced in his decision to enter the ministry by Adolphus Beckerlegge. He started in ministry by supplying at Scarborough and Brigg.

Ministry

Joseph was the first Secretary of the Sunday School General Committee in 1878.

Joseph was President of Conference in 1882.

He was the Principal of Manchester Theological College 1889-93. Ill health, both his own and his wife’s forced his resignation and superannuation.

Family

Joseph married Henrietta Leonard (1832-1904) on 11 July 1855 at Sculcoates, Yorkshire.Census returns identify nine children.

  • Henrietta (1856-1927) – married John Reynard Brogden, a fancy yarn spinner
  • Caroline Annie (1858-1880)
  • Joseph Leonard (1859-1926) – a hatter and hosier
  • Walter James (1862-1939) – a marine engineer
  • John William (1863-1925) – a commercial traveller; later a PP Card publisher
  • Henry Plant (1866-1934) – a school teacher
  • Emma Laura (b1870) – married James Dickinson, a PM Minister
  • Eliza Marie (1872-1926) – married Edward Wattan Pape, a PM Minister
  • Edward Vivian (b1877) – a pharmaceutical chemist in 1911, emigrated to Australia and farmed

Joseph died on 17 June 1898 at Grimsby, Lincolnshire.
