Mansfield Woodhouse (Christchurch,High Street) Primitive Methodist Church

This church was built in 1902

This church is built of stone and brick and has a slate roof.

We know little about it. Between 2009 and 2012 it was called ‘Bethel’ and in 2015 it was known as the ‘International Church’.

In 2018 it is up for sale. It is advertised as having modern purpose built church offices which include meeting rooms at ground and first floor/ There is also a very large secure car park. The advertisement also says that at one time the building was used as a swimming pool!!!

  • Hi. A few months a go i found some information about this church on the Internet, and was really hoping to be able to look at it again but can’t find now, however I luckily wrote some of the information down. The Primative Methodists wanted larger buildings capable of seating more people and a site was purchased for £410 on High Street near the Beeches. Churchmen helped to pull down cottages which stood on the site and to clear away the rubble. Mr F P Cook was the architect and Mr John Ashley was the building contractor, the amount of the contract being £1200. The front of the building was to be of stone and the remainder in brick. Foundation stones were laid in the spring of 1902 by Major General Coke (and others) on behalf of the trustees, Mr William Robinson on behalf of the Sunday School. The date stone on the front of the church clearly shows 1902 and below that are the words carved in stone that read Primitive Methodist Church. It was affectionately known as “The Prims” It is thought most probably that Primitive Methodist Church was renamed Christ Church after Methodist Union during 1930’s. 1970s a swimming pool was created there, then it became a carpet storage place. 1982 it reopened as Bethal Interdenominational Church.
