Swinburn Family

I have been researching my family tree and have been told by one of my cousins that one of my ancestors was a minister of the Primitive Methodist church in Heeley.  His name is William Swinburn and he was born  on 10th March 1837.  He married Sarah Graves born 2 September 1837.

These would be my great, great grandparents.  I wold be very grateful if this could be verified and would appreciate any information pertaining to this family or the descendants, one of whom is my Grandmother Doris Swinburn.

Thank you.

  • Tricia,

Thanks for your post. I have looked in Leary’s index of Primitive Methodist Ministers and cannot find a reference to William Swinburn.

Looking at Census returns I have found a William Swinburn (1831-1911), born at Farndon, Nottinghamshire, married to Sarah (b act 1837), and born at Mission, Nottinghamshire, who lived at Heeley, Sheffield, Yorkshire. I have not found a marriage record, but census returns identify the following occupations.

    • 1851 groom
    • 1861 carter
    • 1871 steel machinery man and Methodist local preacher
    • 1881 coal dealer and PM local preacher
    • 1891 coal merchant

This would suggest that he is your William Swinburn and he was a local preacher living at Heeley rather than being a minister.

  • Thank you so much for your research and information Geoff. Every small piece of information leads me towards working out who is who in the family tree.  Understanding how my ancestors grew up also helps me to understand my grandparents attitudes. religious beliefs etc.

I think your site is very important,

    Kindest regards,

    Tricia
