Mumby is east of Alford. The first Mumby Primitive Methodist Chapel dated from May 1836 and was located in the south of Mumby on the A52.  Speakers at the opening included Bros. Stamp, North and Coulson. The new Chapel measured 20′(w) x 30′(l)

The first Chapel seated 100 and was rebuilt on the same site in 1909, this time with seating for 75, and was renamed ‘Primitive Methodist Centenary Church 1909’ Renaming the building may have been to celebrate the centenary of the Primitive Methodist Connexion two years before in 1907.  The ‘Church’ closed in 2008 and has been converted into a house.

In 2023 the ‘Church’ building had been tastefully converted into a dwelling, keeping all the features of a Primitive Methodist place of worship.

The March 2023 photographs were taken by Elaine and Richard Pearce.

  • This Government O. S. Map cites Primitive Methodist Chapels in Mumby and Cumberworth (LXXVl.1, revised 1905, published 1906, scale 25 inch ) :–

Above the Mumby P.M. Chapel (rebuilt in 1909) is cited St. Peter’s Church and although later known as St. Thomas of Canterbury, etc., here is an explanation :
Two years after the death of Thomas a’ Becket ( died 1170 ) he was Canonised by the Pope at St. Peter’s Church at Segni, Lazio in Italy, yet later he was venerated saintly.
