Phippen, James Stanley Bolwell (1894-1962) (known as Stanley)

Transcription of Obituary in Minutes of Methodist Conference

Born at Northampton in 1894. He was educated at the Northampton Grammar School, and received early training in a solicitor’s office which proved to be invaluable to him in his later ministry.

He was called into the Ministry in 1916 and entered Hartley College. After service as a Chaplain to the Forces during the first World War, he travelled in Netheravon, Bexhill- on-Sea, Peterborough, Luton, Kennington Park, Kingston-on-Thames, York, Grimsby, Scarborough and Ripon.

His administrative ability and  steadfastness of character were recognized in his appointment to various offices, culminating in his election to the Chairmanship of the York District ; and when he became a supernumerary in 1955, he was appointed General Secretary of the Chapel Aid Association.

He retired to Grimsby in September 1961.

He was a man of all-round  capabilities, a fine and thoughtful preacher, and a pastor whose sympathy and understanding healed many a hurt and lifted burdens from many a shoulder.

He was a tactful handler of difficult situations, and a splendidly loyal colleague and friend. Perhaps the outstanding feature of his whole ministry was its strength and graciousness.

His life was rooted and grounded in the love of God, and that love was allowed to flow through him. His steadfastness gave confidence ; and his graciousness, exhibited in  his natural charm, his courtesy of speech and charitable outlook, constantly built bridges and drew people together.

He preached as he lived, and his preaching and life were one in Christ Jesus. He was a good man, a devoted minister who gave himself to the enrichment of others.

He died at Grimsby on 5 February 1962, in the sixty-eighth year of his age and the forty-sixth of his ministry.
