Booth, Sarah (nee Moses) (1834-1899)

Transcription of Obituary In the Primitive Methodist Magazine by T Sowerby

MRS. SARAH BOOTH, the wife of Mr. Josiah Booth, local preacher, Wrockwardine Wood, Circuit, was converted to God during the ministry of Rev. J. Ferguson in the year 1862. For some time before her conversion she sought peace of conscience by attendance upon the ordinances of the Church, but was unable to find rest until, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, she surrendered herself fully to God. Of the power of God to save she never had any doubt, and from the time of her conversion to her death was a consistent member of our Church. She lived a quiet and unostentatious life, and many are the testimonies borne by those who knew her best of the Christly disposition of her character. Her husband found in her all he could desire, and her children a mother of whom they are justly proud. Whilst on a visit to her son at Derby, she was suddenly seized with illness, which terminated fatally on Jan. 15, 1899.

Rev. Dr. Ferguson, speaking of her says: “She was not specially demonstrative; her character of mind, temperament, and training induced the quiet and contemplative. The light of her soul shone out like psalms, and her tears were often the sign of her heart-joy and gratitude. To her the Word of the Lord was precious. In the struggles and troubles of life the precious promises which shone in that Word were her encouragement and comfort, and through them, up beyond the darkness, she saw the face of God as her Father.”

Rev. E. Jones says: “Although nearly nineteen years have passed since I removed from the Wrockwardine Wood Circuit, yet I have a distinct recollection of Mrs. Booth. I regarded her as a consistent member of the Church of Christ. She was ever ready to speak a kindly word or do a loving deed. Her life is concisely and beautifully expressed in the Scripture placed upon the memorial card, ‘She hath done what she could.’ ”

Rev. W.S. Howlett and others bear similar testimony. A memorial service was conducted in the St. George’s Chapel on February 19th by Rev. T. Sowerby.
