Lindsay, Sarah Jane (1833-1905)

Primitive Methodism in Belfast has sustained a heavy loss in the death of Miss Sarah Jane Lindsay, one of its oldest members. Converted in the revival of ’59, she connected herself with our Church, and through all its chequered career in this city remained loyal to the end. In all branches of Church and Circuit work she took a lively interest, and was never happier than when entertaining her brethren of the quarterly board to tea. Her life was spent in the interests of the little Church at Donegall Road. An unswerving attachment to her Church, a strong sense of duty, a large-hearted liberality marked her conduct during a long and strenuous membership. Full of Jesus and with a ripe Christian experience, she fell asleep on January 2nd, 1905. Her end was peace. Death came to her as night comes to us in these northern latitudes – a gloaming, a deepening twilight, then darkness stealing gently over the face of the earth. Death had no terror for her. He was an angel sent to draw the unwilling bolts and set her spirit free. Previous to the interment a short service was held in the church, at which the Rev. A. J. Smith (Superintendent Minister) paid an eloquent tribute to her worth. The Revs. T. R. Holtby (late of Belfast), John R. Fell, and G. B. Richardson also took part. The organist, Mr. A. Richards, rendered the “Dead March” in Saul.
