Sedgley Primitive Methodist chapel

Tipton Street, Dudley DY31HE

Sedgley Primitive Methodist chapel in the Dudley Circuit was opened on Sunday March 21st 1858. Preachers at the opening included Revs John Britain of West Bromwich, William Jones, Baptist minister of The Close, Dr Melson of Birmingham and John Lyre of Wolverhampton.

It measured 43′ x 30′ and was “well lighted and properly ventilated. I wish this could be said of all our chapels – but alas!” commented S Morris in his description of the opening in the 1858 Primitive Methodist magazine.

The cost was a significant £750 of which they had raised £141.

The Sedgley Local History Website gives more detail of the chapel and Primitive Methodism in the area. It says that in the late 1950s the east facing side wall was externally buttressed to prevent possible collapse, but by the end of the century the building was declared unsafe and services moved to the Sunday school.

In July 2016 it is Alpha House, home of Alpha Financial Services.

  • The 1867 Register of chapels lists four Primitive Methodist chapels in Tipton David – Aston Street, Bell Street, Railway Street, Toll End – but we know nothing about the chapels themselves. It would be good to add a page for each chapel.

If you search for Tipton in the search box at the top of the page you get lots of references to Tipton, but chiefly to people rather than the chapels.

  • Is anything known about the Chapels in the neighbouring Tipton PM Circuit? My great-grandfather, Rev John Redhead, was attached to the Tipton Circuit from 1918-1921. The 1921 Census, which I have only just obtained a copy of, shows whilst there he lived at 49 Sedgley Road, Tipton. On the above map if you continue east along Tipton Road it becomes Sedgley Road and No.49 still stands, now a beauty salon, but still proudly displaying a stone plaque between the upper storey windows: “THE MANSE 1908”. The distance between “The Manse” and Tipton Street PM Chapel is about 1.75 miles.

  • This was one of those chapels we knew still existed but we had no photo. Thanks to Keith Allden for providing the pictures. Keith tells us that the pictures are taken from Tipton Street with the camera pointing north east.
