South Molton Primitive Methodist chapel

Laying the foundation stone for South Molton Primitive Methodist chapel is reported by William Wray in the Primitive Methodist magazine.

The ceremony took place on February 24th 1860 when the stone was laid by J. Passmore, Esq., of Gritstone; speakers at the cermony and the public meeting after the celebration tea included Rev. O. Harrison, Rev. W. Hayman, Rev. J. Parsons ( Wesleyan),  Rev. W. Richards (Bible Christian), — Saunders (Baptist) and C. Harrison.

“The walls are to be built of red stone, the plints (sic) and quoins dressed, and a portion of the arches in white brick; if we can classify the style at all, it may be said to be Norman, and bordering on the architecture of the eleventh century ; the whole of the carpenters’ and joiners’ work will be stained and varnished.”

Where was the chapel?  Thanks to Philip Thornborow for suggesting it was called Jubilee and was in East Street. There is a description of the chapel at www.southmoltonmuseum.org/page30.html  which locates it where the current 41a East Street is, an infill terraced house..
