Tetbury Primitive Methodist chapel

Early Primitive Methodists missioned Tetbury several times with some success, but it wasn’t until the 1855 mission by George Warner that a society of about 20 members was formed. They met in a room but the young society was “frequently annoyed, the room being so near the George Inn.” However, the Wesleyans had a chapel and house for sale (as you do) so the Prims bought them for £196. The chapel came ready equipped with pews and gas lightingand the house rent was £8 a year.

Tetbury Primitive Methodist chapel opened on March 21st 1858.  Preachers at the opening services and tea included bros.Warne, Comley, Rev T Page (Independent), G Wallace, G Warner and G Beale.  The opening is described by T Powell in the Primitive Methodist magazine.

Kelly’s Directory of 1923 refers to a Primitive Methodist chapel in Union Street, which was built in 1870 and which seated 100. The Victoria County History of Gloucestershire says “The Primitive Methodists built a chapel on Gumstool Hill above the workhouse in 1870 and occupied it until the union with the Wesleyans in 1932”

Did the 1858 chapel serve just 12 years?
