This is the second Primitive Methodist Chapel in Wem, which was erected in 1842, to replace one in the High Street built in 1823.

The 1897 Primitive Methodist magazine (page 315) tells us that the chapel at Wem has been thoroughly renovated in order to host the District Meeting.
The message is repeated in the next edition of the magazine (page 396). We also learn that the schoolroom was also renovated and that a new organ was installed in the church and a new harmonium introduced in the schoolroom for use in week-night services.
The 1845 Primitive Methodist Magazine (page 78) records anniversary services celebrating the opening of the chapel.
