Bloor, William Elijah (1874-1905)

Transcription of Obituary in the Christian Messenger

On December 6th, 1905, in the morning if his life, our brother, William Elijah Bloor (son of the late Councillor Eli Bloor) fell asleep in Jesus at Erdington (Birmingham Second Circuit), aged thirty-one years. At eighteen years of age he was impressed to seek God by witnessing the awfully sudden death of one of his brothers, which took place at the tea-table. He found mercy, and at once identified himself with our Lord Street Church, of which he continued a zealous, consistent and useful member for the remaining thirteen years of his life. He held a variety of offices in the Church during that period, and showed an interest in them all. His Christian character was evidenced by the spiritual atmosphere in which he lived. His whole soul was absorbed in the Redeemer’s cause. Latterly his piety became mellowed by the beams of the Divine Spirit. His speaking was with power, and his aim was to increase mutual love all round. The law of heredity operated to gradually bring down his manly frame, the will of God coincided with that natural tendency, but divine grace had sanctified his youth and beautified his after years, and the presence of the Holy One made his last hours victorious and blessed. As his sister held his dying hand he said “I am coming!” and after those triumphant words our beloved brother was “received up.” His death had deprived Lord Street Church of some of its Christian manliness, but at the same time it has added lustre to the record of that Church’s usefulness in the past.
