Woodmill 1823 Primitive Methodist chapel

Address:

St. Paul’s Methodist Church, Wood Lane, Yoxall, DE13 8PH

The parish of Yoxall had two Primitive Methodist chapels both located out of the main village settlement. One was to the east at Woodhouses, and one to the west at Woodmill. Woodmill chapel is found north of Yoxall turning left off the A515 road towards Hoar Cross. The first chapel was erected in 1823, but present building was built 1870. It is a Gothic structure surrounded by a graveyard. It remains open in 2017, latterly part of the Burton on Trent circuit, now as a part of the Trent and Dove circuit.

    Dear Messrs “My Primitive Methodists”,
I am pretty sure that the postcode for St. Pauls Methodist Chapel, Woodmill, Yoxall, Staffordshire is incorrect. Its post code is given as DE13 8PH, whereas, I’m pretty sure that it should be DE13 8PG! I also think that the correct postal address (from the Post Office post code finder at http://www.postoffice.co.uk/postcode-finder should be “St. Pauls Methodist Chapel, Woodmill, Yoxall, Burton on Trent, Staffordshire DE13 8PG”.
Although Google Maps gives the postcode of St. Pauls Methodist Church as DE13 8PH in its information side panel for the church, if you click all around the church in Woodmill the postcodes are universally given as DE13 8PG whereas those at Woodlane are given as DE13 8PH!
The postcode given specifically for St. Pauls at https://gridreferencefinder.com/ is, DE13 8PG and the Post Office website post code finder at http://www.postoffice.co.uk/postcode-finder also gives that for “Woodmill, Yoxall” as, DE13 8PG but that for “Wood Lane, Yoxall” as, DE13 8PH, so, it looks to me as though the correct postcode for St. Pauls should be, DE13 8PG (the only church that can be found in the DE13 8PH post code, looks to be St. Francis of Sales R.C. Church, which could cause anyone who didn’t know the area well, considerable confusion) but whether or not this makes much difference to a SatNav, I don’t know (I don’t have one with which to check ).
I also think that in the directions, some specific advice concerning the junction of the A515 with Maker Lane needs to be given (for map readers rather than Sat Nav followers), as the A515 bears to the right and the first signpost seen is a local one, with no mention of Hoar Cross, or the Methodist Church. Carrying straight on would begin to take people up Maker Lane, where they might then miss the signpost to the right of the junction towards Hoar Cross & the Methodist Church but Maker Lane would be signposted to Hoar Cross Hall! Anyone not knowing the area might think that this was OK, subsequently they would then see a signpost for Upper Hoar Cross but not pass a church until they got to Holy Angels, Hoar Cross Hall. Total confusion, it looks nothing like any Methodist Chapel that I’ve ever seen but no other church would have been passed! Carrying on past hoar Cross Hall then would lead to a T junction, with only signposts to Newborough, Abbotts Bromley and the Meynell Ingram Arms. Much consultation of maps would be needed, to work out where a mistake had been made in following the route.

Hoping that this e-mail will help rather than confuse!
    Best Wishes,
Chris Morris (Netherton, Dudley, West Midlands)

  • Joseph Wait is my 4x great uncle too. I will make the effort to visit the chapel soon as my family still live in Staffordshire.

  • Joseph Wait was my 4th great uncle. I have been to this church and found it a wonderful experience.

  • There is a standing memorial in the graveyard, to the right of the path to the chapel that is in memory of the founder of the church.

It reads: In Affectionate Memory of Joseph Wait of Wood- Mill, the founder of this church. He was born March 2 1793 and died in the faith of that gospel which he had for 50 years so faithfully and earnestly preached to others February 9th 1871.

‘His Lord said unto him, well done thou good and faithful servant thou hast been faithful over a few things. I will make thee ruler over many things. Enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.’
