Rouse, Joshua (1808-1889)
Early years
Joshua was born on 3 June 1808 at Bolehill, Derbyshire to parents Joshua and Martha. He was baptised on15 September 1811 at Wirksworth, Derbyshire, along with brother’s Samuel and Job and sister Mary.
Occupation
In 1841, Joshua is working in Manchester as a book-keeper. By 1851 his main occupation was wire-working. In later years this was supplemented by Grocery and Commercial Travelling.
Contribution to the PM Connexion
Kendall writes; ‘Thinking of Mansfield, who can forget good Joshua Rouse, wire-worker, model superintendent, logician, and an expert and yet sympathetic examiner of probationers, and a familiar figure at Conferences.
Joshua was appointed Auditor for the connexion on many occasions; 1852, 1855-8, 1859-60, 1861-62, 1870, and 1871. He often served in this capacity with Thomas Bateman.
Family
Joshua was married to Mary Ball (1803-1868). Census returns identify one daughter.
- Lavinia Ellen (1836-1916) – married Charles Priestley, a PM Minister
Joshua died in 1889 at Wirksworth, Derbyshire.
