Higginson, Thomas (1809-1860)

Killed by a luggage train

Thomas, son of Thomas and Martha Higginson, was born March 5th, 1809, at Barthomley, a small village in Cheshire, on the edge of the Tunstall Circuit. From a child the Spirit of the Lord strove with him, and though he did not yield to be saved till he was about eighteen years of age, yet he was moral in his deportment. When about the age referred to, our brother was brought to seek salvation and joined the Wesleyan Methodists. What were the means of first leading him to seek for mercy I am not able to say, but when he was pleading for pardon, I have often heard him say, he was tempted to think he had sinned away his day of grace; but he gave evidence in after life that he had entered in at the right gate.

About 1841 he married Ann Bagnall, a pious female, of Tunstall, and he joined our Connexion, to which he manifested a strong attachment during a period of nearly twenty years. About fifteen years ago he came to reside near Barthomley Mill. He then joined our society at Oakhanger Moss, Sandbach Circuit, and became a Sunday School teacher; and when our new chapel was built he became a trustee.

Our brother was a regular attendant at the means of grace, and a good supporter of the cause. He was at the prayer meeting on Thursday night, October 18th, 1860, and engaged in prayer as usual, and on Saturday, October 20th, while crossing the railway near his own house, he was killed by a luggage train.
