Fifty years ago the deceased was the pioneer of the Primitive Methodist Society’s work in West Africa and notwithstanding his 78 years he received and accepted a pressing invitation from the Conference to be present at the recent jubilee celebrations of the society with which he has been so long and so honourably associated. Special travelling facilities were thoughtfully provided for his journey to Yorkshire and his venerable and striking appearance on the platform to address a crowded meeting of ministers and conference representatives on that memorable occasion was the signal for a remarkable demonstration of cheering and enthusiasm. Needless to say, such a hearty reception and cordial appreciation of his mission work was very pleasing and acceptable to him.
The Rev. Henry Roe wrote and published several interesting books the sale of his “West African Scenes” running into the 25th thousand. Other works included, “Going to Africa”, “Amos Deer”, the “Fernando Po Mission”, (the author had the joy of witnessing the first conversion in that country, a young Fernando woman) and other works.
The Rev. Henry Roe visited Syria, Galiliee, Samaria and Judea, and his personal travels were published in an interesting volume of nearly 100 pages, the book containing 14 illustrations, including one of the author (photographed in Jerusalem) in the picturesque dress of Abraham.
