Hodgkinson, E. (Mrs) (1775-1837)

Died suddenly, Nov. 15, 1837, Mrs. E. Hodgkinson, farmer, of Dalbury Lees, in Derby circuit aged sixty-two.  She had been a member with us about twelve months, and appeared anxious to be an Israelite indeed.  Her health was precarious; but during the last week of her life she seemed to be better than usual.  She was at a friend’s house in the afternoon of the day on which she died; and in the evening attended the chapel, it being the time for renewing the tickets.  And on my asking her how she was getting on for heaven, she said that lately she had been getting on better than usual, and hoped to be ready when the Lord should call her.  And within fifteen minutes after her leaving the chapel, that call arrived.  While in the act of reaching something from a shelf, she sunk down, said, “I am dying,” and instantly expired.

The Sabbath but one after, I preached a sermon on the occasion, to a numerous and deeply affected audience in D. Lees chapel.  And I am happy to add, that though we have been bereaved of our respected Sister H., others have come forward to fill her place, and the work is going on delightfully.
