Loyd, Mary (1812-1837)

Died at Nantwich, (Burland circuit) April 2, 1837, Mary, daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Loyd, in her twenty-fifth year.  She was born at Wigan in Lancashire, May 11, 1812.  But the family removed to Nantwich in Cheshire; where Mary became a hearer of the word in the P. M. chapel; and manifested a concern for the souls of her relations, persuading her brother-in-law to attend, which led to his conversion, and he is now a local preacher and class leader.  She also joined society and met a few times; but not laying aside every weight, she forsook the class; but attended the chapel.  Her mother dying in August, 1836, she went to live with her brother-in-law, George Williamson; and a new class being formed, she became a member; and Sept 27, 1836, attended class in great distress, but was made happy and praised God.  But by affliction she was often prevented from attending the means of grace; but expressed herself as resigned to the will of God; and when looking on her emaciated body she would say, “What comfort can I expect to have in this world?”  In this prostrated state of affliction she was visited by her friends and class-mates.  When I took her last ticket to her, we had a solemn time in prayer; and it was the opinion of all present that before our tickets were again renewed, Mary would be in heaven.

Her strength daily diminished, her pain became acute, and the day before her departure the enemy made his last great assault.  But in prayer she was much blessed; and the first Sunday in April, 1837, she calmly breathed out her soul unto Jesus, leaving behind an aged father, a brother and sister.  Sunday, April 19, her death was improved to a numerous congregation, when it was believed much good was done.
