Farcet Primitive Methodist chapel

Cross Street, Farcet, PETERBOROUGH, PE7 3DE

former Farcet Primitive Methodist chapel
Keith Guyler 1995

The chapel was opened in 1907 and closed in the 1950s.  It accommodated 120.

By the time of Keith Guyler’s photograph in 1995 it was semi-derelict.  By 2009, Google Street View shows that it has been converted to a house.

  • Thanks for your additional information Mrs Clarke – and sorry to hear about the Registrars’ strike.  I’ve done a bit more exploration looking at various Ordnance Survey maps through the Old Maps website. The Methodist chapel you were a Sunday School teacher at in Main Street that became the Village Hall was the former Wesleyan chapel.  It is not on pre-World War I maps but does appear in the 1926 one.

The chapel in Keith Guyler’s picture still carries the inscription “Primitive Methodist 1907” on Google Street View in April 2009.  However the O.S. map of 1889 also marks a Primitive Methodist chapel in the same Cross Street location – so the 1907 chapel is a rebuild or a replacement.

After Methodist Union in 1932, Farcet, like many villages, would not need two chapels.

  • With reference to my previous comments I think the picture you have is of the chapel that was used before the one in Main Street, Farcet.

  • This is not the Methodist Chapel in Farcet, I used to be a Sunday School Teacher in the 1980’s.  It was sited in Main Street, Farcet.  I would have married there in 1982 but the registrars were on strike.  It is now the village hall, closed in early 1990’s.
