Lound Primitive Methodist chapel

Town Street, Lound, RETFORD, DN22 8SA

postcard belonging to Revd Steven Wild
former Lound Primitive Methodist chapel
Keith Guyler 1996

The tablet on the front of the former Primitive Methodist chapel at Lound dates it at 1903.  It became Lound and Sutton chapel and closed in the 1990s.  It is now a private house.

This was not the first chapel; a directory of 1894-5 also refers to Lound as having Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels.

  • We have in our possession a book published in 1934 consisting of members recipes with the intention of raising money for Lound chapel restoration. Can’t think there will be anyone around who remembers this occasion now, but would be interesting to know if this is the only surviving copy.

  • That’s remarkable Adrian. I wonder what happened to it – and whether it was genuine or one of several?

  • According to A C Addison, writing in 1911, this church had ownership of the original font which had been used to baptise Pilgrim Father William Bradford at Austerfield.

  • I have added an old postcard which shows a building to the right of the chapel, which appears to have been demolished by the time Keith Guyler took his photo. Was this an earlier chapel, or a Sunday School room?
