Lofthouse Gate Primitive Methodist chapel

Keith Guyler’s notes accompanying his photograph say that the chapel shown was opened in 1873 but that it was the second Lofthouse Gate Primitive Methodist chapel. The previous one may have been dated 1837.
It was rebuilt in 1929 to accommodate 140 and at the time of the photograph in 1999 was a Health Club – Healthilife. It is not visible from the road in Google Street View in 2008.

The Primitive Methodist magazine of August 1873 includes an account by J Ayrton of the laying of the foundation stone for the chapel. The Prims had preached in the village for 30 years previously.
The stone was laid on May 24th 1873 (when the weather was beautifully fine) by W Ouston, a Wesleyan village resident.
Preachers included M Sullivan, J Ayrton, Rev C Rumfitt and Rev T Penrose. Donors included Messrs Ouston, Fletcher, Seal, Perks, the Misses Farrer and Forest, Mr Baker, Mrs Dickenson, J Fleck, Mr & Mrs Charlesworth and Jos Farrer
The chapel has been demolished. There was at least in part a new building in 1929
