Old Church Stoke Primitive Methodist chapel
Old Church Stoke, MONTGOMERY, SY15 6DH
Keith Guyler 2000
The notes with Keith Guyler’s photograph say that Old Church Stoke Primitive Methodist chapel was opened in 1869 and closed in 1997.
The Primitive Methodist magazine of 1860 says that the foundation stone for a new Old Church Stoke Primitive Methodist chapel was laid on November 9th 1859. The stone was laid by John Jones of Llandyssill; preachers were Mr Jones, Samuel Ward (of The Wood, Oswestry circuit), Rev C Temperton, Rev E Owen, Sarn (Baptist) and J Heath.
Was this a chapel that only served for 10 years, or is there an error in Mr Guyler’s date?
At the time of Keith Guyler’s photograph in 2000, the chapel was being converted into a house.

There’s an account of the laying of the foundation stone for this chapel on November 9th 1859 in the Primitive Methodist magazine. That’s 10 years earlier than the date in the notes with the photograph we have. Can anyone resolve this?
