James was born on 27 April 1814 in Bristol.

He married Ann Peck Hemm (1810-1892) in the summer of 1838. They had five children.

  • Lydia (1839-1920) – married William Litchfield, a telegraph inspector
  • Ann (1841-1898) – a schoolteacher
  • Harriet (1844-1922) – a schoolteacher
  • Amelia (b1847) – married Jacob Pilling, a PM Minister
  • James Peck (1850-1928) – a PM Minister

James died on 13 July 1868 at Saffron Walden, Essex..
