Nawton Primitive Methodist chapel

High Street, Nawton, YORK, YO62 7SF

By Christopher Hill

Keith Guyler's collection of photographs includes a picture labelled Nawton Primitive Methodist chapel.  Nawton Primitive Methodist chapel served the twin villages of Nawton and Beadlam.  It faces northwards up Nawton High Street on the corner of School Lane. As the tablet over the door says, it was built in 1875.  Although the chapel closed in the the 1960s there is an active ecumenical local partnership.

At the time of his photograph Keith Guyler describes it as in use as a builders merchant.  On Google Street View in March 2009 it seems little changed but used as a builder's store. When they photographed it in 2018, Richard and Elaine Pearce said it was in active use as a builder's workshop.  It had also gained a clock on the outside wall.

Is Nawton the same place as Newton in the Pickering circuit? In the Primitive Methodist magazine for August 1853 there's an account of the opening of Newton Primitive Methodist chapel in the Pickering circuit.  I can't find a Newton in the area, so is it a transcription error or a local variation in the name?
