Lexden Primitive Methodist chapel

Lexden Primitive Methodist chapel near Colchester was opened in 1859 and is still active in 2020. The stone over the door confirms the 1859 opening date.

The chapel in Keith Guyler’s picture, although labelled Primitive Methodist chapel in his archive, is actually the Assemblies of God chapel, also still in use in 2019.  It is about 100 metres away down the same road and appears on Ordnance Survey maps in 1923 marked as ‘club’.  Thanks to Martin Broom for confirming my suspicions of the error and supplying the proper picture..

  • This is the only former PM chapel still extant and in regular use on the Colchester Circuit.
It was led, for many years, by members of the Garling family, who were also prominent at West Bergholt.

  • Unfortunately the photograph is not of Lexden Methodist chapel and much of the information is wrong. Attached should be a 2019 photo clearly showing the chapel still open.
The chapel did indeed open in 1859. The land two cottages and the building cost £366 10s 9d
